What's the biggest social problem in America today?

What's the biggest social problem in America today?

Please tell me . . .

Are you male or Female?
Do you attend church on a regular basis: Yes or No?

Please rank these five problems from 1 to 5 (1 being worst, 5 being the least of a problem):

Obesity
Drunk Driving
Unemployment
Abortion
Racism

If there is a social problem that you think is worse than any of these listed, please name it.

Are steps being taken to beat or deal with the problem you listed as number 1? If so, what are they? Can you think of another way of handling the problem that's not being tried yet?

Thanks!!

I am a male, 21 years of age, and do not regularly attend church (or any religious building).

Obesity - 1
Drunk Driving - 5
Unemployment - 3
Abortion - 4
Racism - 2

Obesity is an growing problem in our country, and from what I can remember, the main focal point for combating this is schools. I have read where snack machines are being turned off, or even completely taken out of schools. While this sounds like a wonderful idea, it is important to remember how much money schools are making off these machines.

Sure, these all might be serious social problems facing our country, but I feel that the overwhelming pressure to be "politically correct" is hurting our nation. I hate that we cater to our younger generations and try very hardly not to hurt anyone's feelings.

Economy is the number one concern in this country for me. We need a swing in the enocomy or we will go into a recession if we have not already. The government is getting involved to try and swing the economy in a different direction, but i think they are using little bandaids for longterm problems. I would like to see more education on the economics of this country so people can get more involved

Male-No Church on a regular basis

1. Rasicm
2. Unemployment
3. Drunk Driving
4. Abortion
5. Obesity

Racism is always a factor in life. It might not be talked about on the news as much as everything else because it happens all the time things are done about it. The Jena 6 is the last large news even of racism. But things like that happen all the time in the South. When I stayed in Louisiana all the races use to fight over stupid things. We would fight for being on the wrong side of town. Or if someone of a different race wouldnt move in the store when we walked toward each other then we would fight. Schools down there are still divided not legally but in the since that all races stayed with there own race. We use to get chased by dogs on the way from school because the school was on the white side of town and the kids would sick they dogs on us until we crossed the highway. All this happened in a small town and I can only imagine in a larger city. Racism is a large part of the united states its just over looked because we as americans are trying to get past it.

To me drunk driving is a major issue. I know police drive on friday nights and such, but they never catch anyone till they get in an accident. For me personally, I drive home sometimes Friday and Saturday nights around midnight and there are so many drunk drivers. I follow a lot of them. I have almost gotten in so many accidents. There are also college students. A lot of college students from my high school *under age* would get drunk and then drive home. I think that Police should watch more carefully instead of sitting in their cars and just monitoring speed. They also could check people coming out of bars to check their BAL. (blood alcohol level) before they go and drive off. This could prevent drunk driving, and accidents.

1. Unemployment
2. Obesity
3. Abortion
4. Drunk Driveing
5. Racism

I think the worst two problems listed unemployment, and obesity both stem from this culture being lazy. Why get a job when the government will take care of you, and why ride your bike when you can stay inside and play with your wii. Abortion will always be an issue legal or not people will argue about it untill the end of days, it is probley the only issue on the list that everyone willnot condem. drunk driveing and racism are not that much of a factor in todays america.

I think the biggest problem is obesity, we as a country are lazy. I think one of the reasons for that is video games. People would rather sit at home and play on the computer or play video games rather than do any kind of activities outside. Another reason that obesity is a problem is all of the different types of fast food restaurants, its a lot easier to go to McDonald's rather than fix something that is healthier at home.

I believe that many people are trying to make easy and fun ways for people to lose weight. It is very common in the workplaces to have some kind of competition to see who can lose the most weight, or walk the most, or something in that nature. Also shows on tv have come out with the Biggest Loser, Celebrity Fit Club, Fit TV,etc. Diets and diet products are everywhere and I think many Americans are trying to either lose weight or stay healthy. Even Mcdonalds has cut down on saturated fats and oils that they were using. Snack producers like nabisco have even come out with products like 100 calorie packs for people who like to snack but are trying to lose weight!

2. unemployment
3. drunk driving
4. racism
5. abortion

I think most people eat fast food because they are usually to busy to eat a healthy meal. It is a lot of work to eat healthier, not to mention more expensive. People also are very lazy, after a long day at work the last thing people want to due is some kind of exercise. I believe if you put an effort into exercising, it's easy to go for a walk with either your spouse or a friend.

1. UNEMPLOYMENT
2. DRUNK DRIVING
3. ABORTION
4. OBESITY
5. RACISM

THERE ARE SOME STEPS BEING TAKEN TO REDUCE THE NUMBER IN UNEMPLOYMENT ;IN MY COMMUNITY BUT NOT MUCH IS BEING DONE IN AMERICA....JOB FAIRS ARE BEING HELD AT THE LOCAL COLLEGES. THOSE ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AS WELL AS THE STUDENTS ATTENDING. I THINK THAT AMERICA SHOULD HOLD JOB RALLY' IN EVERYDTATE AND COMMUNITY AND INTERVIEW MOTHERS,FATHERS,SISTERS,BROTHERS, AUNTS,UNLCES, COUSINS ETC; SO THAT EVERYONE IS GIVEN AN EQUAL OPPURTUNITY.

From worst to least, I would say:
1)Drunk Driving
2)Racism
3)Obesity
4)Unemployment
5)Abortion

Many steps are being taken to deal with drunk driving, such as enforcing harsh penalties against offenders. I think one thing that could be tried that hasn't been yet is to put some kind of designation on the license of people who have been caught drunk driving. Of course, there would be ways to get around it, but it wouldn't allow them to buy alcohol or go to a bar, so it might discourage them from drinking and driving.

I actually think that the worst social problem, one that causes a lot of violence, crime, deaths, and ruins many lives is drug addiction, including alcoholism. Many of the hard drugs can be very addictive, can kill people, are sold by violent gangs, and lead to a lot of crime to get money to buy drugs.

yes i think there are steps that are being taken to beat/deal with obesity, not so much for adults but for children. i know now days schools are really making everyone participate in pe and really tryings to get our youth to stay more active. i also know that whoever made the wii was a smart person because im active and playing games on a wii makes me sweat, so i cant imagine what a fat little kids does. also i know that school lunches are slowly becoming more healthy, the might not be too tastey but they arent quite as bad for you. one other thing i noticed is that in all walmarts there is a subway in it rather than a mcdonalds like it used to be. i know that when im done grocery shopping i will run to subway to get something to eat so i dont have to cook anything, so therefore i think that walmart is trying to gear more towards people eatting healthy and not being obese too.

I think that a bigger social problem is the lack of a national health care system or plan. Many Americans do not have health insurance and can not pay to see a doctor.

There are not really any steps being taken to beat obesity. Fast food commercials and ads are constantly on TV or posted on billboards. With todays American lifestyle it has become an inconvenience to eat healthy and people are uneducated about healthy eating habits. America has the highest obesity ranking. I think that fast food restaurants should be required to meet better health guidelines and we should all get free liposuction!

I try to attend church as much as i can but it is not on an every sunday basis.

1 Abortion
2 Drunk Driving
3 Racism
4 Obesity
5 Unemployment

I think the worst is Drunk Driving and Racism. I do not think the biggest social problem to talk of is abortion because the government and people are trying to take care of it already.

I think a sufficient amount of steps are being taken to help Abortion and to deal with it.

I do not believe in abortion and I feel that if you get pregnant you should take on the responsibility. If people are unable they should give up for adoption. The child is innocent and never did anything wrong, so they should be able to live a life. Abortion is not the way out, give the child a chance and find a family that cares. Adoption is the way to go unless there is a family member that wants to take full responsibility. The only way of handling this problem is adoption.

4. Racism
5. Drunk Driving

All of these issues are important but I think obesity is one of the main problems in the United States today. Every since I can remember, vending machines has always been one of the main roots of the problem, at least that's what the teachers all through high school said. But I think it all falls back on the people that are buying the junk food out of the machines. If a person knows that he or she will get hungry, then that person needs to pack a light healthy snack. Maybe an apple, an orange, banana, or some sort of vegitable or maybe start eating baked chips. I'm quite sure people are aware of what they're putting in their bodies and know the possible outcome(s) if he or she continues to consume that same product.

True to the old Abbot and Costello joke, I believe the biggest problems facing society today are ignorance and apathy. All things considered, most of the problems faced by society as a whole could all be summarized as different categories of ignorance and/or apathy. People could just be ignorant of the consequences, in spite of how obvious the issue may be; they could just not care about the consequences, thinking that "it won't happen to me." As far as I know, there's no concrete way to get rid of either of these methods of thinking; at best, you can diminish them by pointing people in the right direction for proper information, but it's no guarantee.

Their are steps that are being taken right now, as healthier lunches in schools and more activities outside. I believe that we need to do more to get children outside and healthier. More activities outside and more teaching of better foods, etc.

I choose obesity as being the biggest social problem we have in our society. it is because it seems that more and more people are caring lees about their health everyday. The good thing is that their is a lot of diets and fitness products being advertised everyday. I do believe that these ads are making a difference in peoples lives. In my opinion the biggest cause of people getting obese is fast food. These big chain fast food places are making their food cheaper and unhealthier every minute and they are getting rich while people become unhealthy and obese. Personally I don't blame them, I think people should have a little more self control.

For obesity,I don't think much is being done. A way to fight obesity, is that each individual starts making smarter food choices. If they are clueless, perhaps they shouldtake a nutrition or health class. It's up to the individual to teach his/her children what typw of food is good to eat and the the quantity. Obesity usually starts at home,if the the mom and dad are obese the child will most likly be obese as well. The parents have to teach thier children healthy eating habits and excersise habits, for example-instead of getting thier son a nintendo get them a bicylce and spend quality time outdoors. Obese people should also kmow that it's not too late to get into shape, but it's not going to be easy,it takes effort, determination, and attitude. Lazy people will never prosper,so just get out and work out,eat right, because the world is not going to change, the obese individual has to change.

I think the major problems would be obesity and drunk driving. I think that the country has become extremely lazy, because there is so much technology out there that we do not have to do as much work. Also I feel Americans eat a lot of fast food. every where you look there is a fast food restaurant on the corner! I also feel drunk driving is a major issue, because people do it thinking that they wont get caught or that they wont hurt anyone, and sometimes that is true. BUT most of the time it isn’t and someone does end up hitting someone else or get pulled over and get a DUI.

I would say racism is still a big factor because sometimes you dont get hired because of your color. Some people lose there life over things like race. Obesity is a problem also that people arent seeing because they are on the rise and its killing people more and more everyday. Drunk driving is being limited down and people are getting pulled over more an more everyday. Abortion isnt really a problem that effects everyone, its a problem that will effect that person who is doing it.
