Legalizing marijuana

Do you think marijuana should be legalized in the United States? Why or why not? If you think marijuana should not be legalized, what's your view on medicinal marijuana? Should marijuana at least be/remain legal for people with symptoms that can be alleviated by smoking it?

Thanks for your help--

I think marijuana should not be legalized. From what I've learned over the years in school about marijuana is it's somewhat helpful in some medical situations but at the same time, it has dangerous side effects. It's known to be one of the common gateway drugs, it inhibits transfer of information in the short term memory to the long term memory, it contains tar in it, almost 5 times as much as tobacco, and many other negative things. I believe it hurts people more than it actually helps them.

I think that marijuana should be legalized for some medical purposes. When my grandpa was dying from cancer he was going through a lot of pain. Marijuana was one of the many options put on the table to help him deal with his pain. Most people who smoke marijuana do it because it makes them feel good. I believe that is someone is in pain and is dying and marijuana is going to help ease that pain, then it should be able to be an option to them. If they are not abusing it and taking it to get a high, then I believe that it should be legal for medical situations.

I do not feel that marijuana should be legalized, at all. As it is now, it creates many problems due to controlling the illegal selling, growth, and smoking of it. But this is a necessary flaw as most laws contain. Why would the U.S. legalize something that would put other in danger when it is smoked? There is enough people smoking as is, putting something more harmful on the market would cause more of a problem in the later years of these peoples lives. Think about the rise in lung cancer and other harmful and deadly side effects smoking, especially marijuana, can cause. People can not smoke whenever they please because it is illegal, but if it were legalized, it would be smoked on a much regular basis. I do think that it should be kept legal for medical purposes, but for that reason only.

Marijuana is a drug that shouldn't be legalized-notorious for more bad then good. As a medical drug,I'm sure thier are other ways to relive pain then marijuana.
Also studies show that when people smoke large amounts of marijuana has a toll on the functions of the brain. Not only does it affect the brain chemistry like cocain, heroin, and alcohol do but daily use of marijuana affects the parts of the brain that control memory, attention, and learning. So it's a drug that stupifys people. So my response for marijuana is a big fat "no".

If Marijuana was a really good crop in America you better believe it would be legal. Its all about money. America doesnt want columbia to get filthy rich off of us, so we make it illegal. Medical Marijuna is fine with me, I dont have any problems where i need it, but if someone has a disease and marijuna helps them, then let them do it.

I don't believe marijuana should be legalized except for medical uses. I think if someone dying of cancer or any other painful condition they should be able to use anything available to reduce the pain. Regardless of what we do, the people who want marijuana will be able to find it, and if it helps people with chronic pain I think it should be legalized.

Personally i have mixed feeling about legalizing marijuana. If marijuana is legalized I think that it should have close to the same laws as alcohol. Their should be a legal age for smoking it. Their should also be rules about where someone can smoke marijuana and what a person can and cannot do while being high on marijuana. If marijuana stays illegal then i still believe that people should be able to use it for medical reasons.

I personally dont think marijuana should be legalized. I know alot of people get ahold of it and smoke it but it is illegal for a reason. I do think that it is okay for people with medical conditions to smoke it upon doctors orders. I do think it should remain legal for people who need it for medical conditions to use it when needed.

I really would not care if Marijuana is legal or not. I have never used it, nor do I plan on it. I mean if the government was smart, they should legalize it and tax the hell out of it like they do with tobacco and gasoline.

They can make laws like they do for alcohol. No drunk (high) driving, must be x amount of years old, and other stuff like that.

Marijuana is illegal, but that does not stop people from doing it. With our country being Capitalistic, the gov't sure could make some money!

(and yes, medical purposes is okay)

I do not think that marijuana should be legal in the United States. Sure for the medical aspect it could do alot of good but also with the way the side effects can occur it could be really bad. I think that marijuana is illeagal for a reason, that it does not help the person that is smoking it. It makes people do some pretty weird things, things that they would normally not do if they were not smoking marijuana. Take this from example, not me personally but from me watching a freind throw his life away because he smoked marijuana. I think that marijuana should be leagalized only for some of the medical aspects and for that reason alone.

I have smoked Marijuana in the past and I do not think that it should be legalized. If it was it would probably help our economy because it could be taxed by the government but it would probably cost more than it does now and we would be actually giving the government even more control. If it became legal then other drugs would be pushed to become legal and more questions would arise on what should be ok and what shouldn't and I don't think other drugs should become legal, ever! People would probably not even want to do it anymore or as much because it would be legal ad not as exciting. In general, if it was legal people wouldn't be going to work everyday and the price of groceries would go up. On a more serious note, Marijuana does contain more tar than cigarettes and alters people judgments and reaction times. I think that medical Marijuana should be legal because those people are very sick anyway and it helps with their pain. Let them smoke all the pot that they want!

Considering marijuana's current market in the U.S., I don't think there'd be much difference between it being legal, limited to older people and with other restrictions, or illegal; with what I've heard in mind, getting your hands on marijuana (even in places with a no tolerance law against it) is easy. Making it all legal only means that some people, some of the time, would be perfectly within their rights to do so. In short, I don't care because not much will change in either case.

Medicinal marijuana is fine in certain medical uses. If I remember correctly, it can assist with glaucoma (an eye problem) and, obviously, various types of pain, and I don't see why medicinal marijuana shouldn't be used if other treatments aren't readily available or affordable.

I think marijuana should be legalized in the U.S., because it really is not that bad for you. You can not overdose and die; you do not become physically or psychologically dependent to it like you do with cigarettes and alcohol. Marijuana also helps with Glaucoma, chemotherapy, and AIDs. With Chemo and AIDs it helps the nausea and helps you eat. I think if they do legalize it they should have restraints on it like they do with alcohol. Their should be a legal smoking age and laws about what you can and cannot do while you are high.

i think Marijuana should be leagalized. I mean cigarettes are legeal. I personally think that cigarettes are far worse than marijuana. I have heard more people getting sick and dying from cigarettes than weed.

Alcohol is legal, even though it impairs the brain and alters one's actions. Nicotine is legal, even though few would doubt its addictiveness and its contribution to lung cancer. To make marajuana illegal is simply hypocritical.

Why not legalize it. The only reason that it has not been legalized is because there is not way to tax it, and because the there is a lot of money made keeping marijuana illegal. Marijuana helps keep the DEA in business, and helps to keep are prison full. I don’t smoke pot, but in my younger days I smoked a ton. I would be pleased if they made if legal.

marijuana should not be legalized it is a product consumed by lazy ignorant individuals. it is the scourge of the community. the type of people that use this drug often don't have jobs they feed off the government hand outs that they get from the liberals. even in the case of medical use it is not a solution. there are many drugs out there that can ease pain better and without the side effects of this drug.

WHY NOT LEGALIZE IT, THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER WAYS YOU CAN GET "HIGH" THAT ARE LEGAL. MANY PEOPLE USE OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS IN THE WRONG WAY. I THINK THAT LEGALIZING IT WOULD NOT BE A BIG DEAL BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ALREADY USING IT. I THINK THAT THEIR SHOULD BE SOME RESTRICTIONS TO USING IT. (EX. PLACES, HOW MUCH, WHERE YOU CAN KEEP IT.....)

I believe that marijuana should be legalized ... and I have never smoked marijuana in my life so I'm not saying this for my own benefit. More people get killed from drunk drivers then marijuana victims. So essentially we should outlaw drinking if we are that worried about deaths from marijuana. It needs to at least be legal for people who actually need it to ease pain or cure some sort of illness. Either way people who want to smoke marijuana will somehow and more crime will be committed from the selling and buying marijuana.

I don't think marijuana should be legalized just because it would cause a lot more problem and then the next thing people want to legalize would be cocaine of some other drug. Maybe it is useful to the medical side of it and they use it which is fine but if you don't have a medical reason for it then don't use it. If marijuana was legalized their would be more crime and problems with it. It would make people hallucinate like it does and will make people make the wrong decisions.

I do not think marijuana should be legalized. Should not be because I think people would be very lazy. People would smoke weed and not do anything else. When working they could be too high and get hurt. People should only be able to smoke when it is relaxing time. Other than that no. When people have cancer they let them smoke marijuana. It helps them not think about the pain. I think people who are ill should be able to smoke it.

I dont personally smoke pot, but i dont see any reason why it shouldnt be legal. I think it would keep some people out of trouble and keep many people out of jail. This would free up space in prisons and county jails for people who really need to be there. I think that medicinal marijuana is a good thing. I have a friend that had problems with her lungs, and her doctor told her she should continue smoking pot because it helped her breath better.

They should legalize it just because it has never cause anyharm really. It does long distance maybe but so does cigarettes. They would make a lot of money off it if they did legalize it. I dont see what they big deal is over it anyway i mean they use it in hospitals and its already legal in other places. I think in twenty years it will be legal.

I definately think marijuana should be legalized. The only reason it isn't legal is because the govt is stingy and they cant tax the product. It's not even a drug. It's a plant. And if you set it on fire there are some effects.
