Should schools get rid of unhealthy food and start serving healthier foods to their students? Would students get better grades if they were to have healthier lunches?
Here are some recent findings:
Most students who eat school lunch tend to weigh more than those who bring lunch from home.
Schools don’t give a wide variety of fruits or vegetables to students.
Schools put greasy food out where the students can see it but they hide the fruits and vegetables so the students are more likely to grab the bad food.
It’s the same as eating breakfast, if you eat breakfast before school you tend to be more awake and be able to pay more attention. If you eat something healthy or something somewhat nutritious then you have a better chance of being more awake after lunch and will be able to listen in class.
So, what do you think--are unhealthy lunches in schools a problem that needs to be addressed? What was your experience with school lunches?Hillary Moore (11:00)

I believe unhealthy lunches in schools are a major issue. From my experience, Many children buy their lunches which are full of fried and sugary foods. I think if schools started offering healthy lunches only, this would improve the problem. I also believe students in grade school and middle school do not quite understand the impact that diet has on their lives which leaves them in the dark for many of their food choices.

I think school lunches could definitely be healthier, but i also believe that healthy eating should start within the home. parents should be more aware of what they are feeding their kids and themselves. The more kids are taught at home, the more these kids will choose healthier foods at school.
I think that schools should get rid of unhealthy food and start serving healthier foods but I think that it is up to the individual to decide whether to eat healthy food or not. I do think that it is a issue that needs to be addressed since school cafeterias are laden with unwholesome, greasy, and fatty foods. I never had much of a problem with school lunches. Most of the time I brought my own lunch and it always included apple juice, bread, and a piece of fruit.

Throughout school, I always took my lunch from home. I never felt like I liked eating any of the choices that the school offered and even if there was fruit or vegetables offered, they never looked appetizing. On the show Food Revolution, Jamie Oliver showed that healthy school lunches can be offered for the same price of the other school lunches, but the school has to pay for cooks who are actually willing to cook and do things like peel potatoes. I think this is something that needs to be addressed by country because more and more people are becoming obese.

I had no choice but to eat the school lunches because my mother had me on the free lunch program all through school. I was always somewhat jealous of the kids who got to bring their lunch, because I felt like their mother was better because she got up to make it while mine didnt get up til I got home from school. I am not obese and was actually quite healthy and athletic looking back then. While the food may have gone downhill since the 70's, i do believe the school lunches could be a bit healthier. Even the pictures you posted made the healthier choice look better. noone needs all that greasy, fatty ,fried lunch. AS long as you eat , your grades should be ok, i dont think what you ate matters as much as IF you ate.

With rising prices everyone has been cutting back on spending, schools are no different. One way many schools have been cutting cost is by the food they serve. They have started severing greaser food and less healthy food. One reason why this has been happening is because students have the choice on what they eat for lunch, they might not have a lot of choices but they are able to choose from at least a few choices. Students have been choosing greasy, unhealthy foods and by doing so the schools are left with fruits and other foods that they have to throw away. Many of the healthier foods don’t have a very long shelf life, and once they have been either cooked or have been lying out all day, they are no longer good. This is a lot of money for the schools to spend on something they just end up throwing out. The schools are only doing what they need to in order to maximize their money. You can’t blame schools for serving unhealthy foods when the students won’t eat the healthy food.

I believe that schools should serve better lunches. They should provide healthier choices because obesity is a problem in the U.S. I do agree that if students ate healthier they would receive better grades and would have more energy. You can not control what the student eats at home but atleast if you fed the children healthy food, the school could not be to blame for overweight kids.

I belive that school luncges do need to be more heathy. But i do not belive that is the reason for child overweightness. At home is were the child snacks and eats the most. But if the schools would serve better heathyer lunches it would deffinatly help with childrens neutrition. I think that if schools did serve better lunches it might make the child want to eat healther.

What I know is that when you eat food that is unhealthy,(ie: loaded with fat, sugar, salt, and carbs)it makes you tired and ready for a nap, how can that be healthy for students? It is hard to be productive when all you want to do is lay your head down on your desk. When your brain is sluggish it is hard to comprehend lessons being taught. A healthy lunch stimulates the mind and body. The students are able to focus and comprehend the lessons being taught.

Yes schools should have healthier lunches. It will be hard to get them to do it though, because the school cooks will have to try a little harder than just pouring a bag of fries on to a baking sheet and putting it into the oven. On the other side of it though, is that kids are not becoming obese from the school lunches, it is because they are lazy and just sit around the house and eat and play video games.

My experience with school lunches was that I used to bring my lunch from home. I ate a decent lunch til middle school and high school. Middle school involved a bag of chips and a drink. High school was all about going out to eat.
Eating unhealthy helped make me unproductive, which is not a good thing to develop.
School lunches should be healthier. It gets kids into fruits and vegetables quicker if it's around them more often than greasy foods. Eating healthy will avoid health problems for them in the future. They gain more energy from eating better.

From my time in school I noticed that most of the lunches served were not healthy. I feel that this has become a major issue and is contributing to the rising obese rate in the United States. The schools are serving whatever is cheap for them to puchase ususally being greasy food. At the age of middle and elementary school you are unaware on what your eating and how it reacts with your body. Schools should take interest to this issue and try to find a way to put healthier items on the menu, this for lunch and breakfast.

I agree that unhealthy lunches at school shouldn't be offered. Yes healthier food is more expensive but it will help the students focus better and get better grades. the unhealthy food gives the students a sugar rush but eventually that dies and causes them to fall asleep in class or to lose interest in the lessons, while fruits and vegetables give the students the energy they need to stay focused and do well in school. And I feel that parents should try harder to keep healthier foods around the house instead of "snacky" foods.

I definitly feel that schools shold start offering healthier foods to students. I feel that the unhealthy foods like pizza and cheeseburgers everyday will still be the choices that kids make but at least have a meal that can be at least considered a healthy choice. For example, have salad bars and offer more fruit and vegetables to the kids. I agree taht the healthy fruits and vegetables are more hidden and not out in the open as much at schools. I know at my old school you would have all the greasy meals presented already and if you wanted a healthy sandwich or something they were hidden in the fridge at the other end of the cafeteria. They also always have the same fruit which gets really old. They have apples and bananas everyday but you never see, watermelon, melons, strawberries, or any different fruit. I don't feel I learn better with better quality food, i do feel that having a full stomach can make you pay attention more though. Instead of listening to your stomach growl in class, if you have a full stomach that helps me consitrate on my work and not how hungry I am. The big thing I feel taht would be the easiest is if they didn't have soda in the vending machines and replaced them with juice or water, at least a gatorade would be better. I think healthier lunches could be harder to change but drinking healthier would be the easiest.

When we eat unhealthy food our bodies tend to slow down making our minds sluggish and ready for a nap. This interferes with minds ability to concentrate and retain information. Eating healthy gives the mind and body fuel that makes learning easier.

I think they should change the school foods, or atleast make 2 days of the week a vegitarian meal.At my school it was all fatty foods, the only year i eat was during freshmen year and i remember that our school would finish it all. It was disapointing because during physical education many students were chubby.they couldn't run, workout, and many couldn't even walk up the stairs without being late to class and tired. during my freshmen year I would always feel so tired that I'd perfer skipping the rest of the day to sleep at home, unless I had an exam.on my sophmore year when i first met my father and the same year he passed away, i found out he had blood suger it frightened me that with the eating habit i had, i could as well get it, so i started to eat healthier and it helped alot in school and track.

I feel Healthy lunches is important but just like The grocery store is designed for kids to see all the not so good stuff all thru out the aisles, maybe that same system is done in schools. But also if parents start their children out on healthy items at home, when out in public they will have already acquired a taste for the healthier items.

I understand why schools serve the lunches that they do; money is scarce in the public school system. However, I do feel that students would perform better in school if they had healthier lunches. Furthermore, I feel that this would also help with the ever-growing obesity concerns that are arising in the United States today.

I believe kids don;t choose to eat school lunch, cause the think it is gross and not good. they want something that looks and taste good.
the parents should be aware on the kids diet and how they eat.
