Is underachieving academically overall the norm with students today? Why do you think many students don't try to do their best?

Most children do not get the support of parents now. Most families are so out of sync that the children do not have any motivation to succeed. I believe that if some parents were more pushy about getting their kids educated then the whole problem of "Underachieving" will be history

Coming from being a student is the only thing i know i think kids underachieve because they have so much pressure on them from society. If a student underachieves they wont let themselves down since they dont have high expectations for themselves. Schooling is so important now kids get bored with it takin up half their lives.

I know many people who try hard at school, but I also know just as many that don't really care. Maybe some people don't realize how important education is now.

A lot of children have sports and family matters to deal with. They dont want to take the time to remember that they had homework that is due. When children do decide to do their homework their minds are going a million miles a minute about what is going on around them that they dont get to do. So therfore they dont do homework correctly and some even have so much on their minds they forget to turn it in. I think that underachieving is a norm for the children in school.

most kids underachieve in college because they fell it is more of an option them. a lot of them have parents paying for college. they fell that if they beleive that the material isn't worth learning they won't go to class. NO FREE RIDES!!
lots of kids get there parents to pay for there schooling and go to school and mess around for four years and have nothin to show for it. ive been here for three years and aintgot shit done either. but maybe if i paid my own tuition i wouldnt mess around. so i think that if you made students pay for there own tuition they wouldnt mess around during school.

it is in some and not in others. if a kid wants to learn they will. if not then that is there own fault. the parents is suppost to push them and help them. if no support than that tells the kid that the parents dont care what they do or how they do. if they payed for there own school then they might try harder because it is there money that they are wasting

Most kids are underachievers today because their mommy and daddy coddled them when they were little and taught them that failing was o.k. "as long as they did their best." Ah, bullshit - failure should never be acceptable, it's not in other countries. Maybe that's we have the best colleges in the world, but fall behind the rest of the world academiclly.

I Belive it has to do with a person age and the events that is going on in that persons life. Me myself,i'm older than most of my class mates and have more respondsiblity than they do. I'm the father of four teenagers with a very lot on my plate. So because of my situation,I can't afford to fail. I have to many people counting on me,to make their life better. If I'm having a hard time with a class,Im getting as much help as posible. Everybody do not have respondsiblity like this,and might live off their parents,and if they pass or fail doesn't matter to them,because their parents are footing the bill.
Personally, I feel I do my best at school, as for others, you would hope they're trying just as hard but I'm pretty sure it's not the case with all students. I do think that there are times when we bite off more than we can chew, but that doesn't make us "Underachievers". For some people school is fairly simple, and for others it can take 2 or 3 times before they get it. I'm assuming this would alter the statistics of "Underachievers".
Many children don't try because they have no one to push them forward so they continue to fall backwards. I think having support has alot to do wit why children don't try to a achieve things in life.
